The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is a charitable organisation based in the UK working to protect and conserve birdlife and the environments on which they depend. They maintain a bird-guide which lists all of the UK’s birds.

This visualisation analyses the colours of each bird in the bird-guide, and was the first print I produced, back in 2019. It involved manually cutting out every bird from its background in Photoshop, something that is thankfully much easier to achieve now by automating background removal using machine learning.

I asked the RSPB for some leaflets to put in with the prints when I was posting them out, but apparently that’s against their policy, so it’s probably worth noting that this is in no way supported or endorsed by the RSPB. Although you can be sure that some of the meagre profits from each print will go on bird-seed and fat-balls to feed the feral pigeons that visit our back yard each morning.
